AMS 4911 is the specification for 6Al-4V in the Sheet, Strip, and Plate forms. 6Al-4V is known as the workhorse of the aerospace industry because it is by far the most common Titanium alloy. Commonly referred to as Ti 6AL-4V (or Ti 6-4), this designation refers to its chemical composition of almost 90% titanium, 6% aluminum, 4% vanadium, 0.25% (max) iron and 0.2% (max) oxygen.
Ti 6AL-4V (UNS R56400) is an alpha-beta alloy that is heat treatable to achieve moderate increase in strength.
Ti 6AL-4V (UNS R56400) offers a combination of high strength, light weight, formability and corrosion resistance which have made it a world standard in aerospace applications.
Ti 6AL-4V per AMS 4911 is recommended for use at temperatures from -350° to 750°F (-210° to 400°C). Applications outside this temperature range are possible in certain situations. The alloy is weldable. Complex shapes can be made via hot forming. It machines like an austenitic stainless steel.
