The AMS 5758 specification outlines the requirements for Cobalt MP35N, a high-strength, corrosion-resistant alloy supplied in bar form. This multiphase cobalt-based alloy is distinguished by its exceptional mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and resistance to harsh environments, making it a preferred material for demanding aerospace, medical, and industrial applications.

Composition and Key Characteristics

MP35N is primarily composed of cobalt, with significant additions of nickel, chromium, and molybdenum, contributing to its outstanding performance. Key characteristics include:
  • Non-magnetic properties – Ideal for applications requiring magnetic transparency.
  • Ultra-high tensile strength – Up to 300 ksi (2070 MPa) when properly work-strengthened.
  • Excellent ductility and toughness – Ensures durability under stress.
  • Biocompatibility – Suitable for medical implants and surgical instruments.
  • High-temperature resistance – Maintains performance up to 750°F (400°C) in fully hardened conditions.

Solution Treatment and Mechanical Properties (AMS 5758 Condition)

In the solution-treated state (per AMS5758), MP35N undergoes heat treatment at 1900–1925°F (1038–1052°C) for 4–8 hours, resulting in the following mechanical properties:
Tensile Strength: 115,000–145,000 psi
Yield Strength: 35,000–65,000 psi
Elongation: ≥50%
Reduction of Area: ≥65%
While the solution-treated condition provides good formability, additional cold working and age hardening are required to achieve the alloy’s maximum strength in fabricated components.

Applications of MP35N Alloy

Due to its corrosion resistance, high strength, and fatigue resistance, MP35N is widely used in:
  • Aerospace: Fasteners, landing gear components, and high-stress structural parts.
  • Medical: Implants, pacemaker leads, and surgical tools.
  • Oil & Gas: Downhole equipment exposed to corrosive environments.
  • Defense: High-performance military hardware.
The AMS 5758 specification ensures that Cobalt MP35N meets stringent requirements for strength, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. While the solution-treated condition offers excellent ductility, subsequent cold work and aging are essential to unlock the alloy’s full potential. With its unmatched combination of properties, MP35N remains a critical material for advanced engineering applications.
For high-performance applications requiring ultra-high strength and reliability, MP35N stands as a proven solution.
