ASTM F899 / 1.4404 / 316L Medical Alloy

This low-sulfur version of 316 stainless steel is used in many different industries for its good resistance to intergranular corrosion and certain acid mediums. It also exhibits decent welding capabilities and responds well to polishing techniques. Although it cannot be hardened by heat treatment, high strength levels can be achieved through cold working, which also improves its machinability.

 

1.4404 is resistant to reducing the action of organic and inorganic acids and against halogen-containing media. Furthermore, this steel is less susceptible to pitting. The low carbon content also improves the resistance to intergranular corrosion and allows use at higher temperatures up to 450 ° C in continuous operation.

 

316L is excellently cold-worked and weldable. It is mainly used in the chemical, textile, and paper industries and is often used in apparatus, the sanitary industry, and pipe fabrication.
