Cobalt Alloy L605 is the strongest of all the fabricable cobalt alloys. It has an excellent temperature strength and oxidation resistance to 2000 °F. However, Haynes 25 cobalt alloy is hot formable between 1900 ≥F- 2300 °F. In addition, it is better to cold-work alloy L605 for bending, spinning and drawing component processes.
 
The most impressive feature of this material is that it retains substantial strength even at high temperatures of 980°C, while its oxidation resistance holds up to 1090°C. In contrast, nickel-based alloys at these temperatures would either have already softened or would shed their oxide scale at the slightest touch. L605’s greatest asset is its"balance"—while it may not rank first in any single category, it performs impressively across several key metrics.

Machining and Welding

L605 is both weldable and formable, but its machining costs are indeed high.
 
Welding — A Mature Process Requiring No Post-Weld Heat Treatment
L605 can be welded using a variety of methods, including Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Electron Beam Welding, and Resistance Welding.
Key Welding Considerations:
Shielding Gas: Argon (99.999% high purity); flow rate: 12–15 L/min.
Interpass Temperature: Maintain below 100°C to prevent overheating, which can lead to grain coarsening or hot cracking.
Submerged Arc Welding is not recommended, as its high heat input tends to induce grain coarsening and embrittlement.
Prior to welding, the surface must be thoroughly cleaned to remove any oil, paint, or marking pen residue.
Post-weld rapid cooling is recommended, followed by a solution treatment (1177–1232°C, water quench) to restore optimal material properties.
 
Machining Recommendations:
Tools: Carbide (e.g., K313), cobalt-containing high-speed steel or carbide tools are recommended.
Cutting Strategy: Low spindle speed, small feed rate, and adequate cooling.
Reference Cutting Parameters: Linear speed ≤ 25 m/min, feed rate 0.05-0.1 mm/rev
When machining L605, we generally require very high tool tip temperatures, and cooling must keep pace. The machining cost is approximately 4-6 times that of stainless steel.
