Monel R405 Description

Monel R405 (UNS N04405 / W.Nr. 2.4360, 2.4361 the free-machining version of Monel 400. A controlled amount of sulfur is added to the alloy to provide sulfide inclusions that act as chip breakers during machining. A Ni-Cu alloy with high strength and excellent resistance to a range of media including seawater, hydrofluoric and sulfuric acids, and alkalies. Used in marine and offshore engineering, chemical andhydrocarbon processing equipement, valves, pumps, shafts, fittings, fasteners, and heat exchangers.

Monel R405 Features

Resistant to seawater and steam at high temperatures
Excellent resistance to rapidly flowing brackish water or seawater
Excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking in most freshwaters
Particularly resistant to hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids when they are de-aerated
Offers some resistance to hydrochloric and sulfuric acids at modest temperatures and concentrations, but is seldom the material of choice for these acids
Excellent resistance to neutral and alkaline salt
Resistance to chloride induced stress corrosion cracking
Good mechanical properties from sub-zero temperatures up to 1020° F

Heat Treatment

Monel R405 does not react to heat treatment.

Forging

Forging of Monel R405 is not recommended due to the presence of the intentional sulfur content.

Hot Working

Monel R405 should not be hot worked.

Cold Working

Monel R405 can be easily cold worked.

Annealing

Monel R405 is annealed at 927°C (1700°F) followed by air cooling.

Hardening

Monel R405 can be hardened only by cold working.
