 Stellite 6 is a"veteran"among cobalt-based alloys. Its design philosophy is straightforward: cobalt serves as the matrix to ensure high-temperature performance; chromium provides corrosion resistance; tungsten contributes solid-solution strengthening; and carbon forms hard carbide particles. These carbides are embedded within the matrix like pebbles; consequently, during wear, it is the carbides—rather than the matrix itself—that are abraded. As a result, in demanding applications such as valve seating surfaces, high-temperature bearings, and pump sleeves, its wear resistance lifetime is anywhere from several to several dozen times longer than that of standard stainless steel.
