Waspaloy is a high-performance nickel-based superalloy known for its exceptional strength and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. Conforming to AMS 5708, the alloy is particularly favored for aircraft fasteners, turbine blades, and high-stress bolting applications due to its ability to maintain structural integrity at temperatures up to 1500°F (816°C) and resist oxidation up to 1750°F (954°C).

Manufacturing Process
Waspaloy round bars are produced using advanced melting techniques to ensure purity and uniformity. The most common methods include:
- Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) followed by Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR)
- Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) followed by Electroslag Remelting (ESR)
These processes eliminate impurities and enhance mechanical properties, making the alloy suitable for critical high-temperature applications.
AMS 5708 Heat Treatment
To achieve optimal hardness and strength, AMS 5708 Waspaloy undergoes a precise heat treatment process:
Solution Treatment
- Heat to 1975°F (1079°C) in a vacuum induction furnace.
- Air cool for 4 hours to achieve a hardness of 20-25 HRC.
Stabilization
- Reheat to 1550°F (845°C) using VAR or ESR methods.
- Air cool for 24 hours to stabilize the microstructure.
Age Hardening
- Reheat to 1400°F (760°C).
- Air cool for 16 hours to achieve a final hardness of 34-40 HRC.
Note: Scale may form during heat treatment in oxidizing environments, but it does not affect material properties. It can be removed via acid pickling or mechanical methods.
Weldability and Fabrication
- Welding: AMS 5708 can be welded using argon-arc methods with AMS 5828 Waspaloy filler metal. However, welding is not recommended for high-stress applications due to potential cracking.
- Hot Working: Performed at 2140-1800°F (1170-980°C).
- Cold Working: Includes hydroforming, drawing, spinning, bending, and rolling.
