AMS 5737 is a technical specification published by SAE International for A286 stainless steel, a high-performance iron-based superalloy. This material is renowned for its exceptional strength, corrosion resistance, and thermal stability, making it a preferred choice for demanding aerospace, industrial, and high-temperature applications.
Standards and Equivalents
AMS 5737: Covers bars, forgings, and rings.
ASTM A453 (Grade 660): For bolting applications.
UNS S66286: Unified numbering system designation.
Key Characteristics of A286 (AMS 5737) Stainless Steel
- Material Type: Precipitation-hardenable austenitic stainless steel (iron-nickel-chromium alloy).
- Temperature Resistance: Maintains mechanical properties up to 1300°F (704°C), outperforming many conventional stainless steels.
- High Strength: Achieves tensile strengths exceeding 140 ksi (965 MPa) after heat treatment.
- Corrosion Resistance: Resists oxidation and corrosion in harsh environments, including jet engine and chemical exposure.
- Fabrication: Can be machined, welded, and formed in the annealed condition, then age-hardened for peak strength.

A286 bar can be solution treated at the temperatures detailed below, rapid cooled and then age hardened at 1325ºF (720ºC) for 16 hours and air cooling. The 1800ºF (980ºC) solution treatment produces the highest creep-rupture strength in age-hardened material whereas the 1650ºF (900ºC) treatment results in improved ductility and room temperature strength.
