Model No: 15-5PH Stainless Steel Sheet

AMS 5862 / 15-5PH Stainless Steel Sheet

AMS 5862 specification covers a corrosion-resistant, precipitation-hardenable steel in sheet, strip, and plate. 15-5PH is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel. The material provides the same performance characteristics as 17-4PH, including excellent ductility and transverse notch toughness, but, in comparison, has superior overall toughness.

15-5PH Stainless Steel Sheet is a variant of the older 17-4 and 15-5 was designed to have greater toughness than S17400, especially in the through-thickness (short transverse) direction. Alloy 15-5 is used in applications that require high transverse strength and toughness, such as engine parts, aircraft components, nuclear reactor components etc.

Applications

Aerospace structural components (skin panels, brackets, fittings).
High-stress parts requiring strength-to-weight ratio (engine mounts, fasteners).
Marine and chemical industries due to corrosion resistance.

Processing Considerations

Welding: Possible with post-weld heat treatment to restore properties.
Machining: Best performed in the annealed condition; aged material is tougher.
Cold Working: Limited post-aging; may require stress relief.

Testing & Compliance

AMS 5862 mandates tensile tests, hardness checks, and corrosion resistance evaluations.
Microstructural exams to ensure proper heat treatment.
