The High-Strength, Corrosion-Resistant Austenitic Alloy
In the world of stainless steels, where the trade-off between strength, corrosion resistance, and fabrication is often a challenge, grade 1.3964 (UNS S20910 / XM-19) stands out as a remarkably high-performance solution. Also known commercially as Nitronic 50, this nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steel is engineered to deliver exceptional properties that surpass those of standard alloys like 304, 316L, and 317L, making it a superior choice for the most demanding applications.

Unmatched Strength and Non-Magnetic Properties
A primary advantage of XM-19 stainless Steel is its significantly enhanced strength. In its annealed condition, it offers nearly double the yield strength of common austenitic grades. This high initial strength allows engineers to design components with reduced section sizes, leading to substantial weight savings and lower overall material costs without compromising performance. Furthermore, its strength can be significantly increased through cold working processes.
A critical feature that sets XM-19 apart is its stable austenitic microstructure. Unlike some other grades that may become slightly magnetic after cold working, XM-19 remains fully non-magnetic, even after severe deformation. This unique characteristic makes it indispensable for applications involving sensitive electronic sensors, medical imaging equipment (MRI), and other scenarios where magnetic permeability must be avoided.
Superior Corrosion and Wear Resistance
XM-19 stainless steel provides excellent corrosion resistance, performing at a level equivalent to or better than alloy 317L in a wide range of environments. It exhibits strong resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion caused by chlorides. Crucially, its composition grants it outstanding resistance to Sulphide Stress Cracking (SSC), earning it a listing in the stringent NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 standard for sour service in oil and gas exploration.
Beyond chemical corrosion, XM-19 also boasts superior resistance to mechanical degradation. It demonstrates significantly higher resistance to abrasion, erosion, and cavitation erosion compared to standard austenitic stainless steels, thereby extending component life in harsh, particle-laden environments.
Exceptional Performance Across Extreme Temperatures
The alloy retains excellent ductility and toughness across an extremely wide temperature range. It performs reliably from cryogenic temperatures up to high elevated temperatures, making it a versatile material for everything from liquefied gas systems to high-temperature process components.
Key Features Summary
- High Strength: Nearly double the yield strength of 304/316L stainless, with potential for further strengthening via cold work.
- Excellent Corrosion Resistance: Resistance superior to 317L, with excellent chloride and sulphide stress cracking resistance (NACE MR0175 compliant).
- Stable Austenitic Structure: Guaranteed non-magnetic, even after severe cold working.
- Enhanced Durability: Superior resistance to abrasion, erosion, and cavitation.
- Broad Temperature Range: Excellent toughness and ductility from cryogenic to elevated temperatures.
- Certified for Specialized Use: Approved for sour service (NACE MR0175) and food contact (FDA).
Applications
The unique combination of properties makes XM-19 the material of choice for critical components across diverse industries:
- Oil & Gas: Downhole instrumentation, wireline cables, valve and pump components, wellhead parts in sour service environments.
- Marine: Shafts, fasteners, pump components, valve trim, fittings, and fixtures exposed to seawater and high stress.
- Food Processing: Equipment for processing, handling, and transportation where high strength, corrosion resistance, and FDA compliance are required.
