Custom 455 (UNS S45500) is a precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless steel known for its exceptional high strength, corrosion resistance, and toughness after heat treatment. Conforming to AMS 5860, this alloy is supplied in sheet, strip, and plate forms, making it ideal for aerospace, marine, and industrial applications where standard austenitic grades (e.g., 304, 316) lack sufficient strength.

Compared to other PH (precipitation-hardening) stainless steels like 17-4PH, Custom 455 Stainless Steel sheet offers superior mechanical properties with higher yield strength (up to 1700 MPa) while maintaining good ductility and corrosion resistance.

Fabrication & Heat Treatment of Custom 455

1. Machining

Best performed in the annealed condition
Requires rigid tooling, slower speeds, and high-pressure coolant
Similar machining techniques to other high-strength stainless steels

2. Welding

Recommended methods:
  • Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
  • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG)
  • Resistance Welding
Avoid oxyacetylene welding (can lead to cracking)
Post-weld heat treatment (aging) is required to restore strength

3. Hot Working

Forging temperature range: 899-1260°C (1650-2300°F)
Must be cooled slowly to prevent cracking

4. Cold Working

Can be cold-formed in the annealed condition
Requires intermediate annealing for severe deformation

5. Heat Treatment (Aging)

Solution Annealing: Heat to 816-927°C (1500-1700°F), then air cool
Precipitation Hardening (Aging):
  • H900: 482°C (900°F) for 4 hrs → Max strength
  • H1000: 510°C (950°F) for 4 hrs → Balanced strength & toughness
