What is Monel Alloys?
A nickel-copper range, Monel alloys exhibit outstanding corrosion resistance in a wide range of media including seawater, hydrofluoric acid, sulphuric acid and alkaline.
Stronger than pure nickel, Monel alloys are resistant to corrosion by many aggressive agents, including rapidly flowing seawater. They can be fabricated readily by hot- and cold-working, machining, and welding.
Monel Alloys Properties
Monel is a solid-solution binary alloy. As nickel and copper are mutually soluble in all proportions, it is a single-phase alloy. Compared to steel, Monel is very difficult to machine as it work-hardens very quickly. It needs to be turned and worked at slow speeds and low feed rates. It is resistant to corrosion and acids, and some alloys can withstand a fire in pure oxygen. It is commonly used in applications with highly corrosive conditions. Small additions of aluminium and titanium form an alloy (K-500) with the same corrosion resistance but with much greater strength due to gamma prime formation on aging.
As an expensive alloy, Monel is typically much more expensive than stainless steel, its use is limited to those applications where it cannot be replaced with cheaper alternatives. For example, in 2015 Monel piping was three times more expensive than the equivalent piping made from carbon steel.
Monel Alloys Uses
Monel alloys resists corrosion to outstanding levels, in a range of environments: from pure water to non-oxidising mineral acids, salts and alkalis. As a result, Monel alloys are sought-after in a range of industries, including aerospace applications, oil and gas, marine applications, chemical processing, petrochemicals and refineries.
Typically, Monel alloys used to create things like valves, pumps, pump and propeller shafts, gas tanks for storage and crude petroleum stills. It is also used for the manufacture of tooling, well head and exchanger equipment.
The most common Monel alloys are Monel 400 and Monel K500. Monel 400 is a pure nickel alloy that exhibits excellent resistance to corrosive environments and offers ductility, weldability, and pliability required in extreme conditions. Monel K500 is a nickel-copper alloy with added titanium and aluminium, making it even more resistant to corrosion and offering higher strength and durability.
